Obrestad Hungry for Second WSOP Bracelet

Obrestad Hungry for Second WSOP Bracelet
Posted On 29 Jun 2010 By admin. Under Uncategorized.

Following her £1 million cash in London however, she has been unable to perform on poker's most celebrated stage, the WSOP in Las Vegas, because she's always been too young - until now.

Having finally breached the legal age requirement of 21, Obrestad is at the biggest show in town and is relishing every moment.

"I've really enjoyed the World Series," said Obrestad. "I've been looking forward to it for a while and have thrown myself fully into it. I've played 14 events which is loads when you think I don't really play the mixed games."

The young Norwegian may regard No-Limit Hold'em as her speciality event, but at the moment it is the $5k Pot-Limit Omaha where Obrestad is performing admirably, amongst the chip leaders with 52 left.

"It's been surprisingly easy today," she told PokerListings. "I have Eric Liu to my left and he is a tough player, but overall I've been getting my chips in ahead.

"Normally I just get it in bad and suck out or bust out, but today I've been getting it in in good spots."

When asked whether this could be the event that sees her collect her second bracelet, Obrestad just laughed.

"Haha, well one thing at a time," she said.

"All I care about right now is cashing. Once I've done that, maybe we can think of other things."

Obrestad is well-placed for a run at the bracelet, but she has several tough competitors to dispose of first, including PokerListings blogger Jason Mercier - who showed his Omaha pedigree at last year's WSOP, winning a bracelet in the $1.5k Omaha tournament.

Timoshenko on fire in WSOPE final 36

Timoshenko on fire in WSOPE final 36
Posted On 30 Sep 2009 By admin. Under News.
While the Ukranian born and U.S. raised 21-year-old currently sits 15th in chips, surrounded by a group of poker's greatest stars who are all trailing chip leader and 2009 WSOP bracelet winner Matt Hawrilenko in the fight for a seat at the final table, recent history has to make him a favorite to book one.

Timoshenko has more than $3 million in career live tournament earnings, including $2,149,960 from a win at the 2009 WPT Championship this past April, all collected over the last two and a half years.

But his poker prowess extends to the virtual felt as well.

Just last week he took down the PokerStars WCOOP main event, adding $1.7 million to his online MTT winnings, which now total more than $3 million over the past three years.

Weaned on online poker, starting when he was just 15-years-old, Timoshenko told PokerListings his game is built for both the virtual felt and inside the brick and mortar.

"I think my game is very adaptable to both online and live play," he said. "If you are just good at reading people you are not going to have as much success online and if you're only good at the math and playing ABC, you might do well online, but you're probably not going to do well live."

A serious student of the game, Timoshenko certainly appreciates that experience is an important factor in his success.

"I definitely paid my dues before I became successful and started making lots of money," he said. "I spent a lot of time playing, learning, reviewing my play and just talking to other people about poker and seeing what I could pick up."

However, his approach to learning the game has been a bit more analytical than most.

"There are definitely players that have played a lot more hands of poker than me," he said. "I just took a different approach. I studied and reviewed sessions as much as I played poker when I started out."

As scary as it sounds, Timoshenko admits he's still learning how to pick up some of live poker's subtleties, but he is obviously getting more comfortable with them every day.

"I'm very much a math guy," he said. "A lot of the reads I make are not based on live tells, but more on picking up on player tendencies, bet sizing and the way people play different strength hands. I use all that information to make my decisions.

"But I've been more comfortable with live poker for a while. It's not the way I started playing poker, I've played a lot more hands online than live and because of that, I guess I feel more comfortable playing online than live."

The chance for Timoshenko to get even more comfortable will come as the final 36 plays down to a final nine at the WSOPE main event starting at 12 p.m. BST in London Wednesday.

But with names like Praz Bansi, Arnaud Mattern, Eric Liu, John Kabbaj, Chris Bjorin, Ram Vaswani, Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu and a host of others still well stacked, it will not be a walk in the park for the young star.

La Ronde beats Tureniec to take EPO title

La Ronde beats Tureniec to take EPO title
Posted On 19 Sep 2009 By admin. Under News.
The $5300 buy-in event drew a gaggle of top pros including Doyle Brunson, Annette Obrestad, Liv Boeree and EPT Barcelona runner-up Marc Goodwin.

CardRunners' Eric Liu and Full Tilt Pro Michael Turenic, who both made the final table at EPT London last year, earned spots in the final nine.

Liu bowed out eighth, but Tureniec, who just 10 days earlier reached the final table of the Partouche Poker Tour event in Cannes (set to play out Nov. 21 with a top prize of €1 million), continued his hot streak, finishing runner-up.

"I'm very satisfied with my performance, but, as always, when you end up in the heads-up you want to win," Tureniec said. "Now I hope the victory will come in the WSOPE or EPT London instead."

The Swede took £121,815 for second.

La Ronde's previous career best cash was $116,325 for his second place finish on Luton leg of the GUKPT in August.

Cash games take London by storm

Cash games take London by storm
Posted On 15 Sep 2009 By admin. Under News.
Eleven players from 10 countries sat down to play the second edition of the PokerHeaven European Cash Game over 12 hours Monday night at the Hospital Studios in Central London.

The line-up included Ricardo Sousa, Bruno Fitoussi, Andy Black, Leo Margets, Eric Liu, Francois Balmigere, Andrew Feldman, Sammy "any two" George, Simon Munz, Andreas Hoivold and Jens Kyllonen.

And although George has been tagged as a fish by other players on more than one ocassion, he managed to win more than anyone else.

George arrived late but was able to outplay the others, taking a total profit of €24,075 out of the game.

Early on Black and Liu dominated, but as soon as George entered the game he started raking pots. By the time it was all over, Liu had lost €17,425 while Black held on to post a €11,275 profit.

Margets, the last woman standing at the 2009 Main Event, also left with a small profit.

Seven one-hour episodes of the game will now be edited for television and will air on The Poker Channel every Friday at 22:00 CET from Oct. 9.

In the meantime, George is scheduled to play heads-up with Tom "durrrr" Dwan in London later this month.

As a part of a live durrrr Challenge event presented by Matchroom Sport, the two are expected to play a total of 500 hands of Pot-Limit Omaha or No-Limit Hold'em heads-up with $500,000 at stake.

A firm date has yet to be announced, but it clearly won't be Sept. 16 and 17 when Dwan will be joining a stellar line-up of Full Tilt Pros for yet another high-stakes cash game in the British capital.

Full Tilt Poker is playing host to the 2009 Million Dollar Cash Game event and pros Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Justin "Boosted J" Smith, Patrik Antonius, Gus Hansen, Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham and Howard Lederer are all confirmed to play.

In addition to Dwan, David Benyamine and Doyle Brunson are likely to appear.

Phil Ivey raked an $807,400 pot during the 2007 edition of the Million Dollar Cash game and it was considered the largest amount ever won in a single hand of a televised cash game at the time.

There have since been several pots on GSN's High Stakes Poker that cracked the $900,000 mark.

Episodes of the 2009 Million Dollar Cash Game will begin broadcasting on Sky Sports in January 2010.
